In the second and final preseason scrimmage of 2017 the Stillwater Pioneers traveled to
Norman for action against Norman HS, Deer Creek, Newcastle, and Putnam City North. The
Pioneers were not as dominant as they had been a week ago in their home scrimmage, but
there were plenty of bright spots.

Coach Tucker Barnard said he was “happy we got out of here with no injuries, that’s
certainly important to be full strength when we open up next week. I thought we
underachieved a little this week in practice and it showed up tonight too. Our execution
wasn't as good as last week, and we had several mental mistakes. That's why we do these
(scrimmages) though.”

The assistant coaches seemed to agree with Barnard. Defensive Coordinator and Asst Head
Coach Jeremy Hughes commented that “We looked pretty good defensively but we have
plenty of work to do. We need to finish plays and swarm the football. We are trying to
create a feeding frenzy on defense and we just didn't have that tonight.” Coach Clarence
Holley added “The defense played ok in the rapid fire but allowed 2 TD s on deep balls that
should have been defended. During the game versus Newcastle we kept a couple of drives
alive due to penalties. We did a much better job of playing fast, physical, and down hill in
the game portion. We played good situation defense and handled odd formations well. On
the night we were respectable but can be far better than we showed.”

According to Offensive Coordinator Chad Cawood “Offensively we didn't play the way we're
capable, but it's exciting to know we were still able to score 3 touchdowns in our half game.
If we'll trust the process we are capable of being pretty good.”

Stillwater beat Newcastle in the half game portion 21-0, but it's obvious from the coaches
reactions that they expect great things from this team. Stillwater opens the regular season
next week versus Edmond Memorial in a game being played on Thursday night, 7pm at
Edmond Santa Fe’s brand new stadium.
