Gundy To Thomas Connections Works For SHS
9-9-17 by Darnell Pointer
They grew up in the same neighborhood, and Gunnar Gundy and Evan Thomas looked as if they were playing backyard football at times.

They combined for two touchdowns to lead Stillwater to a 14-7 victory against Moore on Friday night at Pioneer Stadium in a nonconference football game.

They were two of several big plays for the Pioneers (2-0).

The scoring started after penalties pushed Stillwater inside its 10. Gundy threw a 65-yard touchdown to Thomas with 5:34 left in the first quarter.

Linebacker Winston Watkins set up the second touchdown in the second quarter when he blocked a punt to give the Pioneers the ball on the 28. On the next play, Gundy connected with Thomas for a touchdown with 8:25 minutes left in the quarter.

Gundy started the game completing his first four passes for 156 yards.
"Gundy is great at the deep ball and our receivers are great at running the routes to make those plays," Stillwater coach Tucker Barnard said.

Gundy threw the ball to Evans with ease.
"I feel comfortable throwing to him because I know he will try to come down with the ball," Gundy said.

Thomas went into halftime with 93 receiving yards with two catches.

Stillwater's defense also contributed big plays. Defensive lineman Kameron Linsenmeyer intercepted a pass and returned the ball to 79 yards the 9 before losing a fumble.

Qwontrel Walker secured the game for the Pioneers with a 41 yard run with 1:42 left in the fourth quarter.

On Moore's last drive before halftime, the Pioneers managed to force a turnover on downs with the Lions on their 1.

"That was a big time defensive stand," Barnard said, "That doesn't happen that often."

Stillwater also had big plays that weren't touchdown though one play ended in the end zone and the other ended at the 1.

On Stillwater's first play, freshman running back Qwontrel Walker went 92 yards on the left side for a touchdown, but the play was called back because of a holding penalty. Walker finished with 74 yards.

Garrett Leming emerged as a target in the second half with 64 receiving yards. Gundy threw a 45-yard pass to Leming, who was tackled at the 1 with 6:50 left in the third quarter. Stillwater lost a fumble to end the drive.
